UPS AND DOWNS

UP: To the Airheads Beemer Club, for having a sense of humor while not being swayed by the latest in techno-wizardry. Billed as an “Unpretentious BMW club for classic Boxer owners,” the group has several rules, including, “Airheads appreciate function over form, fact over fiction and friendship over friction” and “Airheads like to share time, knowledge, parts and beer with other Airheads.” Sounds like our kind of club. Dues are $10 per year in the U.S., $15 in Canada,

$22 overseas. For more information, write the Airheads Beemer Club, R0. Box 178913, San Diego, CA 92177.

UP: To Sears Point Raceway, for putting down their flags and picking up their golf clubs. The raceway sponsored a golf tournament that raised more than $26,000 for Visions For Youth, a Sonoma County, California, organization dedicated to helping area at-risk youths.

DOWN: To the Monongahela Power Company and West Virginia state resources agencies, for their roles in the cancellation of the Blackwater 100 cross-country race, which ran annually for 19 years near Davis, West Virginia.

The power company, which owns much of the land used for the event, and resource agency officials raised questions about water and land use at the race site, forcing the AMA to cancel the race. An AMA spokesman says the power company was concerned with liability isssues, while agencies were worried about the race’s impact on the environment. The Blackwater 100 was replaced by the Starvation 100, held south of Parkersburg, West Virginia.
