HONDA'S NEW 600 SUPERSTAR?
HONDA REPORTEDLY WILL unleash a lightweight, high-performance CBR600RR in 1995 to stave off the challenge of Kawasaki’s anticipated ZX-6R (see Roundup, July, 1994).
Careful attention to making the CBR600RR lighter could result in the new Honda tipping the scales at just 355 pounds-a decrease of about 50 pounds-according to England’s Motor Cycle News. Some of the weight loss will come via a new frame, said to be considerably lighter and stiffer than the one it replaces. A single-sided swingarm is a possibility.
Honda is apparently not content to have a serious weight advantage over the other sporting 600s. It will reportedly be very competitive in the power department, as well. The new engine isjiaid to produce 105 horsepower on Honda dynos, some 10 more than the current unit. A ram-air system will likely be used to duct cool air into the carburetors, helping boost high-speed power.
Bodywork similar to that of the CBR900RR will add style to the 600’s substance. An American Honda spokesman refused to comment about the bike, which will reportedly debut later this year at a static showing in Japan. -Robert Hough
