The Perfect Bloody Mary
IF YOU’RE LUCKY, THE BAR WILL BE OPEN WHEN YOU arrive at Mike’s. Lucky because Ramon will be making Margaritas and his world-famous Bloody Marys. Ramon has been at Mike’s for 18 years, and in that time he just may well have perfected that tomatoflavored concoction. Other Bloody Marys merely taste good; his will have you sleeping with the dogs and barking at the moon.
Ramon is more than happy to talk about what he puts into the drinks to make them so rambunctious. He starts with vodka over ice, then adds lemon juice, tabasco, salt and pepper, a little salsa and tomato juice, and of course, a secret sauce. But like all great recipes, the ingredients are important, but the mix is crucial. And when Ramon is pressed about amounts of each ingredient, he shrugs his shoulders and says “it all depends.“
On what? “Why, the moon, of course.’’
