VANCE WINS NMRA TOP FUEL RACE
RACE WATCH
Reigning Pro Stock Champion Terry Vance won the NMRA Top Fuel race held in conjunction with the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Vance, riding his Byron Hines-built Fueler with a Suzuki GS1100 engine installed for the first time, won without facing Bo O’Brochta’s Kawasaki, which blew up on the starting line.
All elapsed times and terminal speeds were uncharacteristically slow due to hot, humid conditions, what Vance termed “bad air.” O’Brochta led qualifying with a 7.51 e.t., followed by Jim Bernard’s 7.62, Vance’s 7.63 and Wayne Davis’ 7.69. O’Brochta’s quickest pass of the day was a 7.37. Vance turned 7.57 in his solo final pass after O’Brochta’s bike broke.
No other motorcycle classes ran at the event.
