Hines Sight
Question; What do Kevin Hines and former enduro champion Jack McLane not have in common? Answer; Husqvarna. Hines just became the first nonHusqvarna rider in 17 years to win the national enduro championship. The KTM-riding Hines mathematically clinched the title with a second place behind Larry Roeseler at the Bad Mountain Enduro in California, while Dave Bertram, Husqvarna's last hope for 1987, finished fourth. Way back in 1970, Jack McLane won the championship on a Honda; but since then, Ron Bohn, Bill Kain, Dick Burleson, Mike Melton and Terry Cunningham have kept the title exclusive Husqvarna property— until now.
The Most Valuable Point
If it takes 900 points to win a championship, a single point can’t mean that much. Or can it? For Team Suzuki (formerly known as Team Hammer), a single point made possible a fourth WERA national roadrace endurance championship.
Suzuki actually had a secure 48point lead going into the final race in Georgia, but an engine failure halfway into the six-hour race cost the team 42 minutes and dropped them to 30th place. Meanwhile, the Human Race team survived transmission trouble to finish fourth. When it was all over, the season’s points were tallied: 900 for Suzuki, 899 for Human Race. It was the closest finish in endurance racing history.
The Land of the Incas
There aren’t many motorcycle events that cover 2500 miles of dirt
in 10 days. And there aren’t many that range from sea level to 16,000 feet in elevation. In fact, we know of only one: the Incas Rally, which will be held in Peru this April.
Promoted by the plastics manufacturer Acerbis, the Incas Rally was inspired by the famous African Paris-to-Dakar rally. This year will mark the second running of the Incas event, which is open to riders of all nationalities, although only the first 50 entries from America will be accepted. Those will have to be 50 very determined riders, though, because the entry fee is $ 1900. Entry deadline is January 31. For information, contact Acerbis Plastica USA, 1091 1-H Wheatlands Ave., Santee, CA 92071; (619) 562-1440.
