Flitz Polishing Ball

Tough buff puff

BEING SIMPLE-MINDED FOLK, WE LOVE our things shiny. Aluminum, chrome or plexiglas, a shine is fine. But the universe always seems to work against the gleam, dulling all that which you’ve

spent hours wrecking your fingers rubbing.

The Flitz Polishing Ball is a means to stem the tides of tarnish while saving you some work. Compatible with any ½-inch drill, it looks like a miniature mop and is made of soft “Italian polishing felt.” Flitz offers a full range of polishes (and waxes) for virtually every kind of hard surface. We tried two types of shining agents: Metal Polish, and Fiberglass, Metal, Paint Restorer. We also used other makers’ polishes, to test flexibility.

Results were good. On paintwork, using a 1350-rpm cordless drill, oxidation and scratches were removed and paint shine restored, regardless of the brand of polish used. On windscreens, small scratches (but not deeper ones) and clouding were buffed away, while uncoated aluminum found long-lost luster. Even a beat-up stainless-steel dirtbike silencer had its surface corrosion and smaller scratches sent shineward. The ball is nicely sized for work on a motorcycle, but is too big for nooks and crannies.

While the Polishing Ball won’t replace a traditional buffing wheel for cutting a shine, or your fingers for getting into tight spots, it is a good additional tool for keeping that gleam in your eye.
