EVS SC02 Pro F Series Knee/Shin Guard
CW EVALUATIONS
On your knees, please!
KNEE GUARDS ARE ONE OF THE MOST important yet often overlooked pieces of off-road safety gear. Problem is, more often than not, conventional knee guards don’t stay put. EVS’s SC02 Pro F Series Knee/Shin Guard uses two layers of¼-inch-thick neoprene combined with four hook-and-loop fasteners for a secure, non-slip fit. A combination of molded plastic and high-density foam covers the most vulnerable areas of the knee and shin.
With the inherent stretchiness of neoprene and near-infinite adjustability provided by the strapping, it’s easy to get a good fit on pretty much any size leg-which is why EVS offers the SC02 in only Medium and Large sizes. The relatively small knee cup rides comfortably under snug-fitting motocross pants, and the lower portion of the guard nestles neatly inside boot tops. Protection is as good as, if not better than, that provided by much larger guards, which is as much as can be expected from anything short of full-on braces. Given the choice, we’d opt for a slightly larger knee cup, as long as it didn’t interfere too much with comfort.
Our only complaint is that the SC02s tend to be hot on warm days. In response, EVS sent us a pair of Travis Pastrana signature-series guards. These are perforated and have an additional piece of neoprene sewn into the inside of the knee. Worn back-to-back with the standard SC02, the vented model didn’t seem to offer much cooling effect. Why? For one, the vent holes are tiny. What’s more, the guard is covered up by pants and tucked into the top of a boot. On the plus side, the stitchedin-place patch on the inside of the knee did make the fit more secure-even under super-sweaty conditions.

Perspiration aside, if you can’t afford or don’t want knee braces, SC02s provide a lightweight and surprisingly protective alternative. Even better, you won’t feel ’em until you need ’em.
