STATES, FEDS CONSIDER HELMET LAWS

Eleven states are considering laws that would require motorcyclists to wear helmets, according to the American Motorcyclist Association. Legislation has been introduced in Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Utah.

On the plus side, U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell has introduced a bill that would ensure states without helmet laws get full federal highway construction funding. Money will be eliminated in October 1994, for states without a such a law.

Campbell says the legislation is a better way to let states deal with motorcycle safety, rather than have the federal government dictate laws.

BUY A DUCATI STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE

Lotus Tours brings a twist to the concept of European tours-the chance to buy a Ducati straight from the factory and ride it for two weeks through Northern Italy, Austria and Switzerland.

Bikes are about 7 percent cheaper than U.S. list price, and there is the added bonus of a factory tour, lunch in the Bologna factory executive dining room and a two-day visit to Florence. For more information, contact Burt Richmond at Lotus Tours, 1644 North Sedgwick St., Chicago, IL 60614; fax 312/951-7313.

WATCH A TAPE, RIDE IN MEXICO

Riding in Mexico offers many pleasures, as well as potential pit-falls, but Alpine Adventure Films is aiming to smooth out the bumps with a 60-minute video, “How to Motorcycle in Mexico.”

Nothing’s left out here. Royce Fonda at AAF says horror stories about bandits are true, as are reports about bad food, water and road conditions.

Nonetheless, Fonda says there’s many a good time to be had south of the border. The $25 tape tells you how to deal with customs and visas, and what to take and expect. For more information contact Alpine Adventure Films, RO. Box 1598, Englewood, CO 80150; 800/532-5557.

JORDAN’S KING SET TO CRUISE

King Hussein of Jordan recently added to his collection of motorcycles, shopping at Rockville HarleyDavidson in Gaithersburg,

Maryland. The king selected two H-D Ultra Classic Electra Glides with sidecars, a 1200 Sportster, a Dyna Low Rider, a Heritage Softail Classic and a BMW R1100RS.

“It was pretty exciting. There was a big police escort with a bunch of bikes and cars,” said Tom Buzas, a dealership employee. “He was great, real down-to-earth. He’s a typical thrill-seeker.”

While the king pondered his purchases, his wife, Queen Noor, got the family decked out in the appropriate attire, selecting about $2000 worth of Harley-Davidson Motorclothes for the family.

FOR THE RECORD

Regarding our project CBR900RR (CM/, April ’94), the Mike Velasco Racing exhaust system was not to blame for the brake pedal clearance problem we experienced, as stated in the story. In fact, an improperly installed footpeg was the culprit.
