ROUNDUP

This issue hit mailboxes and newsstands smack in the middle of the Summer of Love. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was one of the year’s hot films; Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was selling like—well, like a Beatles record; China exploded its first hydrogen bomb; a Soviet cosmonaut was killed during his capsule’s reentry and three American astronauts died in a launch-pad fire. And in the world of motorcycling, all eyes were on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.

Man the Irish Cycle World was there to cover the TT and to interview Mike Hailwood, who had just won both the 250cc Junior and 500cc Senior TT races aboard Hondas, bringing his string of Isle of Man TT victories to 12 in seven years.

In Roundup, Publisher Joe Parkhurst blasted members of the Hell’s Angels for their testimony before the California Assembly during a hearing on mandatory helmet use. The Angels claimed that riders of lightweight motorcycles were more likely to have accidents than riders of heavier motorcycles.

European motorcycles dominated this edition’s ad pages, but Honda checked in with a twopage spread singing the praises of the high-piped 450 Super Sport, and invited readers to take a demo ride. My, my, how times have changed.
