UPS AND DOWNS

ROUNDUP

UP: To Dairyland Insurance, for being the first insurance company to provide free helmet damage coverage with every comprehensive collision policy sold to motorcycle riders. Under the terms of the protection, if a rider is wearing a helmet at the time of a motorcycle accident and the helmet is damaged, that damage is covered. The purpose of the program is to encourage helmet wear, according to a company spokesman. Dairyland Insurance can be contacted by calling 602/860-7861.

UP: To the American Motorcyclist Association and the Dunlop Tire Corporation, for co-sponsoring a service called Compu-Tour. In order to use the service, AMA members contemplating a tour specify their starting and finishing points and up to eight intermediate stops along the way. Compu-Tour crunches this info and spits out a customized trip for the rider along either the mostscenic or most-direct routes, complete with all mileage, directions and highway numbers. The service is free to AMA members, though a $2.50 postage-and-handling charge is required.

UP: To motocross legend Bob Hannah, for apparently being willing to race anything. Hannah was named as one of 17 drivers in the April 2 1 running of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race held in conjunction with the Long Beach Grand Prix Indycar race. That means he'll be piloting a race-prepped Toyota through the Long Beach street-track’s concrete canyons in the company of racers such as Bobby Rahal and Johnny “Lone Star J.R.” Rutherford. These races have become known as contact events due to the, er. creative passing techniques of the professionals, who start 30 seconds behind the celebs. Drive? Us? No, thanks, we’ll just watch.

DOWN: To actor Richard Grieco, who plays private investigator Dennis Booker on the Fox Television show “Booker,” and to the producers of the program, for allowing the Booker character to ride a motorcycle during several episodes with out wearing a helmet or eye protection. Bad example, guys, es pecially in light of a recent spate of celebrity-rider crashes. 4

UP: To CW's European Correspon dent Alan Cathcart, for his on-thejob training., Long-time Twins and Vintage racer Cathcart went to Day tona this year and came back with two trophies. Cathcart placed third in the 500cc Premier class at the AHRMA Historic Cup races, riding a 1962 Norton Manx. He then rode his Spondon-framed Ducati 888 to sixth place in the Pro Twins GPI final. Next, he'll be asking for a raise.

UP: To the Harley-Davidson Motor Company for its continuing efforts to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Those efforts, which include fund-raising activities, re sulted in a presentation to the com pany of the MDA's corporate appreciation award, presented an nually to those who help the MDA towards its goals. Harley-Davidson joined MDA's national sponsor family in 1980 and since has raised millions for the association. Harley's "Ride For Life" program has brought $283,000 to the MDA in the last two years.
