GP RACING RETURNS TO AMERICA
In a surprising turn-around that is bound to have American roadrace fans smiling, officials at California's Laguna Seca Raceway announced that there will be a USGP in 1993.
Last year, Laguna Seca was unable to conclude an arrangement with grand prix major domo Bernie Ecclestone, who demanded $1 million from each track the GP circus visited. The track secured its 1993 date through the intervention of three-time 500cc world champion Kenny Roberts, whose K.R. Sports Promotion Co. arrived at an agreement with Ecclestone and Dorna Promocion, the Spanish company that owns the TV and trackside-advertising rights for all GP events. K.R. Sports Promotion officials declined to say what the company paid Ecclestone and Dorna, disclosing only that it was more than the amount required to stage a race last season, and that the deal included options on the event through 1996.
The 1993 running of the USGP will take place at Laguna Seca on September 12, with a full card of 500, 250 and 125cc classes scheduled. For further information, contact Laguna Seca Raceway. P.O. Box SCRAMP, Monterey, CA 93942; 408/648-5111. -Jon F. Thompson
