Hassayampa Inn

Prescott, Arizona

THERE’S MORE TO THE GRAND Canyon State than the Grand Canyon, as any motorcyclist who’s traveled Arizona Highway 89A can tell you.

Less than 100 miles in length, 89A runs from Flagstaff to just north of Prescott, and is blessed relief from Interstate 40. With more curves than a burlesque dancer, the road bumps and grinds its way through some spectacular scenery, including the red mesas of Sedona and the hillside mining town of Jerome.

At road’s end is the city of Prescott, a delightfully old-fashioned slice of small-town Americana complete with friendly people and a courthouse square. Among the town's attractions is Whiskey Row, a restored block of saloons and gambling halls, now on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Should you find yourself in Prescott at sunset, the best move you can make is to check into the Hassayampa Inn on Gurley Street ([602] 778-9434). Opened in 1927, and named after a local river, the three-story, brick hotel was the pride of the city and for years served as its social center. After a lengthy decline, the Inn was restored to its former glory in I 985. Today, 67 rooms are available, each furnished in a comfortable, old-time style, and the hotel’s restaurant. The Peacock Room, is known for its good food and excellent service. Light sleepers may want to ask for a room away from sometimes-busy Gurley Street, but other than that, the Hassayampa Inn—like the road that leads to it—is a can’t-miss proposition.
