ROUND UP

JOE PARKHURST

MY LEG, broken about this time last year in an over-eager burst of enthusiasm, is now fully recovered. So I recently took delivery of a new motocross bike for my weekly “golf game” at Saddleback Park, as Ed sold my 360 Maico shortly after the accident. (Some accident. I wasn’t watching and dragged my foot through a deep rut, breaking my ankle in nine places and my leg in two more.) I’ve ridden my new AJS a lot lately. Norton Villiers, through the courtesy of sales manager, Bill Calhoun, and service manager, Brian Slark, sold me the very first Ajay in this country. As you can tell, I’m sure happy.

I rode the first production AJS 250 and the 370 at the factory in England last fall, and even took my chances on one of the works bikes prepared for Bengt Arney Bonn and Andy Roberton. My collection numbers 1 1 bikes now, not antiques and rare old birds, but often-ridden, contemporary bikes. Some day I may get bitten by the old bike bug. I’ve always wished I had saved my KSS Velocette, Triumph Trophy, Matchless G-80, 350 Jawa, etc.

GURNEY DOES IT AGAIN

One of the nicest guys in racing, and certainly one of the fastest, is Dan Gurney, who pulled down third finishing spot in this year’s Indianapolis 500-mile race. Dan finished 2nd last year and always finishes high in the running. He’s a tiger on a bike, as well. Gurney is one of the principles in Montesa Motors, distributors of the Spanish built bikes. His car is a 1970 Olsonite Eagle TC-Offy, built by Dan’s special shop in Orange County, Calif. [Ö]
