Ups & Downs

UP: To Dave Schultz, for fighting back against the Big C. At last October's Matco Tools SuperNationals in Houston, Texas, Schultz's first race back after being diagnosed with colon cancer, the six-time NHRA Pro Stock Champion qualified sixth, then outran three-time series champ Matt Hines and Joe DeSantis before gunning down Geno Scali in the final. The win was Schultz's second of the season. “I’m a little weak, but I’m still strong enough to hold on to the bike,” he said. “It’s a real Cinderella story to come here after my first treatment and get a win. I needed this.”

UP: To David Bailey, for putting himself on top-again. The 38-year-old former motocross and Supercross champ won the wheelchair division in last fall’s annual Ironman Triathalon World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Bailey, who was paralyzed in a practice crash in 1987, finished the grueling event in 11 hours, 5 minutes and 20 seconds.

DOWN: To prophecies, for coming true. Prior to a ride near Nevada’s Lake Mead drumming up interest for the upcoming Las Vegas Guggenheim motorcycle show, gap-toothed actress and model Lauren Hutton told the local Review-Journal, “I love the feeling of being a naked egg atop that throbbing steel. You feel vulnerable, but so alive.” Shortly thereafter, the 55-year-old Hutton lost control of her BMW F650 and crashed. The resulting injuries included a concussion and numerous broken bones. Not exactly a PR coup.
