BACK-TO-BASICS YAMAHAS

WHEN IT COMES TO entry-level dirtbikes, Yamaha won't be taking it on the chin any more. Beginning this spring, consumers will be able to buy the all-new TTR225 and TTR250.

Designed to bridge the gap between small and middisplacement machines, the TTR225 is based on the old, street-legal XT225, while the TTR250 is patterned after a Japanese-market dual-purpose bike. Both bikes are equipped with electric start, an addition not found on many entry-level off-roaders. Certainly, "the button" will be a welcome feature among target buyers.

Priced at $3299, the 225 boasts a low, 33.6-inch seat height,

yet has more than 11 inches of ground clearance. And even though the air-cooled, fourstroke Single will likely not shred its rear knobs with any regularity, it should handle most trail situations with ease.

Aimed directly at Honda's XR250R, the TTR250 will have big shoes to fill as the perfect, 250cc four-stroke beginner bike-not to mention being known as little brother to the WR400E With more than 11 inches of suspension travel, the bike certainly looks serious.

Disc brakes, resettable odometer, headand taillights and a USFS-approved spark arrestor make the $4699 TTR endurolegal. We can't wait.
