V-TWIN DIRTBIKE REVEALED

HOW DOES 100-HORSEpower roost sound, or feel, for that matter? Well, those with $9000 and a desire to go really fast will be able to find out, thanks to Motorcycles Costa Mesa.

MCM, a small operation in Costa Mesa, California, is developing the unusual 948 V2, which is powered by a 948cc V-Twin engine made by Folan, a Swedish company. Unusual among production dirtbikes for its enormous claimed power, the V2 is also uncommon because of its chrome-moly steel perimeter frame, multi-compartment fuel storage, and plastic bodywork that shrouds much of the engine.

It will also have the latest WP suspension, dual Keihin 39mm carbs, disc brakes, an electric fan to aid cooling, and electric start.

for ATK. The company, founded to develop a concept envisioned by William Thomas, formerly of ATK, says it will build the bikes on a per-order basis. Helping Thomas bring the idea to fruition are Bjorn Elvin, who cofounded Husaberg and was a development engineer at ATK; Ove Hasselberg, a former Saab test engineer; and William Kniegge, former dealer development manager

Elvin promises that the V2 will be a performance standout. “It will be very, very fast, and it will be very light, as well,” says Elvin. “It will weigh only 275 pounds.”

MCM says its motorcycle is designed for cross-country and rally use, and will be sold in Europe in street-legal form.

The anticipated retail price is around $9000. There is no word as to when the bike will be available. For more information, contact MCM, 2930 Grace Lane, Unit K, Costa Mesa, CA 92626: 714/850-0829.
