DUNLOP UNVEILS NEW KNOBBIES
DUNLOP IS MOVING DIRT in a different direction. As such, two new knobbies, the intermediate/hard-terrain D739 and intermediate/ soft-terrain D756, are slated to replace the popular K490, K695 and D752.
Offered in 18-, 19- and 21-inch sizes, the D739 has already made a stateside appearance as original equipment on 1999 Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki motocrossers. The new tread pattern is reminiscent of the K490 and K695 around the center, but the side knobs are shaped differently. The result, we found at Dunlop’s proving grounds in Huntsville, Alabama, is a better performing, more durable tire. What’s more, the K490’s spooky sensation in muddy conditions is gone.
The D756 replaces the D752, which was well-liked by riders who ride in soft, loamy conditions. Less aggressive in appearance, the D756 hooks up equally well, yet corners and slides more predictably. Dunlop also alleges greater durability, with which we agree.
Dunlop will continue to sell the hard-terrain D707, as well
as the D755 for really soft, muddy terrain. A replacement for the latter is in the works. As for the new D739 and D756, prices should remain consistent; expect to pay about $85 for a front and $ 100 for a rear. -Jimmy Lewis
