Evolution of the sport-cruiser
I T WAS AN INTRO FIT FOR ROYALTYand, in fact, The King himself, Richard Petty (along with biker son Kyle) was there at the Sturgis Rally & Races when Victory pulled the wraps off its new-for-'OO V92SC.
What The King and I saw was a hotted-up version of the standard V92 cruiser aimed more at turning comers than turning heads. The SC (for “SportCruiser”) starts with the V92’s frame and gas tank, then gets rigged for backroad duty. Up front, there’s a massive 50mm Marzocchi fork with 5.1 inches of travel.
Between its beefy sliders you’ll find a 17-inch wheel wearing radial mbber, and twin four-piston Brembo calipers putting the clamp on 300mm floating rotors.
Out back resides a sportbike-spec 180-series Dunlop. Gone are the floorboards and pullback handlebar, replaced with mbber-topped pegs and a flat-track-bend bar. A thinned-down, one-piece saddle is more in line with the SC’s sporting mission.
The rear fender is bobbed, the front shrunk from the V92’s full valance to a stylishly small blade.
Motor-wise, all year2000 Victories get new camshafts, recalibrated EFI, a redone (quieter) airbox and less restrictive (noisier)
mufflers. Figure about a 10 percent gain, says Victory. The SC’s 2-into-l exhaust system with its goliath can adds another couple of ponies for a rear-wheel reading that should be on the good side of 60.
“This isn’t a sportbike and it’s not a cruiser,” says a company spokesman. “It’s in a category all its own.” Never mind that Harley-Davidson with its FXDX Dyna Sport and Moto Guzzi with its V11 s may want to argue the point-it’s good to see cmisers getting with the program. -David Edwards
Catalog Custom No cruiser stays stock for long, not even a sportcruiser, which is why Victory already has a full line of bolt-ons ready to go for the new SC. Taking centerstage on the model shown is a raised, slash-cut exhaust-other styles are available, too. Adding a certain Manx Norton flair is the headlight-mounted flyscreen, while the chromed sidepanels and billet crank cover are pure eye-candy.
