Schrade Tough Tool

CW EVALUATION

A little something for the MacGyver in all of us

IT'S HARD TO BEAT A GOOD TOOL-ESPEcially one with 21 different functions. That would be the Schrade Tough Tool, a nifty multi-purpose im plement that weighs just 8 ounces and folds into a package measuring 4¾ X 1½ inches.

At first, the Tough Tool looks like some kind of contortionist contraption doubled over on itself Not far wrong, but swing open the stainless-steel "handles" and you get a serviceable pair of 7inch pliers, complete with needle-nose tip, aggressive chompers and wirecutters.

Housed inside both handles are the Tool's real claim to fame, a variety of blades, screwdrivers and files that would have "Home Improvement's" Tim Allen grunt ing in ecstasy. Included in the arsenal are a scribe, an awl, a wire-stripper, and for any anglers in the audience, a hook disgorger, a scaler and a measuring gauge (well, as long as your catch isn't over 2V2 inches). For après-elbow grease celebration, there's also a bottle opener that's especially useful for devo tees of imported, non-twistcap brews.

Easily transportable, the Tough Tool slips almost unnoticed into a tankbag or jacket pocket. It's proven particularly handy on the Editor's vintage rides, stemming the usual flow of loosened bolts, clamps, screws, etc., and even per forming minor carburetor surgery when a main jet decided to cease jetting.

All-up price, including your choice of leather or nylon carrying sheath, is $80. Not bad for a toolbox that fits in the palm of your hand.
