UPS AND DOWNS
UP: To Turbo Bike magazine, for its coverage of motorcycle turbocharging. Although it is produced on a shoestring budget, the magazine provides turbo enthusiasts with an abundance of information. In addition to a parts directory and a feature on Mad Mel Mandel’s 280-horsepower turbocharged Suzuki/Honda (see Cycle World, February, 1990), the current issue covers intercooling, low-compression pistons and racing fuel. For more information, contact Joe Haile Enterprises, R0. Box 800725, Valencia, CA 91380-0725.
UP: To radio station KL0L-FM in Houston, Texas, for raising $40,000 with its first annual Easyriders Charity Rodeo Run. The event benefited the Harris County Children’s Protective Services and The Stevens and Pruett Ranch, a local farm dedicated to abused and neglected horses. An estimated 4700 motorcyclists took part in the ride, reportedly making it the largest motorcycle event in Texas history.
DOWN: To the parties responsible for constructing a barrier that seriously injured three competitors during the recent Tecate SCORE Baja 500. Several riders crashed into the built-up dirt embankment located 1.5 miles from the start. Team Kawasaki rider Paul Krause hit the obstacle wide open, suffering a broken ankle and two compressed vertebrae. “There’s no guarantee in any off-road event that the course will be clear,” said SCORE President Sal Fish. “I feel really bad for the riders, but when you have to battle the natives, it really makes things difficult.” U
