ROUNDUP

June, 1964

Gracing the cover was one of the most desirable machines of the era, the $ 1 198, twin-cylinder BSA Lightning Rocket. The 654cc “Beezer” promised its rider impressive performance, smoking through the quarter-mile in what was considered a blistering pace 25 years ago: 14.8 seconds at 88 mph—a time that most modern bikes only a fraction of the BSA’s size could now easily demolish.

This issue also featured Honda’s 350cc grand prix championship-winning roadracer. The inline-Four engine boasted four valves per cylinder. produced a claimed 52 horsepower. and had its redline pegged at an unbelievable—for 1964—12,500 rpm. In contrast, the 1989 Honda CB-1 400 also has four-valve cylinders, makes 55 horsepower and has a 13,500rpm redline. yet is EPA noiseand emissions-approved and comes with a full warranty. The 350 did. however, utilize some of 1 964's highertech racing features that are still popular today: a six-speed gearbox, a dry clutch and, for more cornering clearance, an ignition/generator unit mounted behind the cylinders.

IT WAS AN ISSUE CRAMMED COVER-to-cover with motorcycles, scooters and minibikes that wore names beginning with almost every letter of the alphabet: Bultaco, Gilera, Lambretta. Omega, Simplex, Triumph, Yamaha, Zanella and many more.

Still, a look through this issue is evidence that motorcycles have come far in 25 years—far enough to make you wonder what they'll be like in 25 more.
