NMRA HONORS VANCE AND HINES
The National Motorcycle Racing Assn. (NMRA) honored 1981 Pro Stock Champion Terry Vance as Rider of the Year. The NMRA is the motorcycle drag racing affiliate of the National Hot Rod Assn. (NHRA). The NMRA also selected Byron Hines, Vance’s friend, tuner and business partner, as Mechanic of the Year.
Since teaming up a decade ago, Vance and Hines have won four Pro Stock Championships and two Top Gas Championships (Top Gas was phased out several years ago in favor of the Super Eliminator class).
The NMRA award marked the third time Hines has been named Mechanic of the Year by a drag racing organization. Hines won the title from the now-defunct American Motorcycle Drag Racing Assn. (AMDRA) in 1977 for building the en-, gine unit in Russ Collins’ V-Eight Honda Top Fuel bike. He won the title again in 1978, this time from the International Drag Bike Assn. (IDBA), which effectively replaced AMDRA, for building Vance’s Pro-Stock-winning GS1000.
Vance won seven of the nine NMRA Pro Stock races in 1981.
