Honda taillight, 21-in. front wheel with light-deflector shield and raked-back fairing, changes that some people felt stretched the IDBA “stock appearing” code for Pro Stock. Pogue used the bike to set a new IDBA Pro Stock record of 8.98 sec. at 147.26 mph earlier in the season, and the controversy set by his bike’s modifications wasn’t diminished when Pogue put the same engine in a more conventional, NMRA-legal Pro Stock chassis and turned 9.16 at Indianapolis.
At an IDBA rules meeting after the season, IDBA officials not only affirmed that Pogue’s bike met IDBA rules for 1979 but also decided to allow even wider rear tires and more extensive frame modifications for Pro Stock in 1980.
Responding to the IDBA rules, Vance, who ran a conventional Pro Stock chassis in both IDBA and stricter NMRA events, said that R.C. Engineering’s Byron Hines would build two Pro Stock Suzukis for Vance to ride in 1980: one conventional chassis and one to-the-rules-limit IDBA dragster-style chassis.
Vance and Hines will campaign Suzuki GS1100 16-valve engines in 1980.
