Goldie

This nice paperback of 75 pp approx has a subhead stating that it is the development history of the Gold Star BSA. The author, who travels under the pseudonym of "A. Golland" apparently was privy to a good deal of this early research and while not really disclosing anything shatteringly new, delves into

some minutae that otherwise might have been overlooked such as the material used in valves, for instance. We consulted our local expert Brian Slark, who knows a thing or two about BSAs, and his com ments were roughly that the book looks as if it were culled from a collection of service bulletins (of course not everyone is privy to them) and that most of the development references were connected to the 350 while over here, at least, more emphasis was put on the 500. However, there is a lot of similarity in the two engines, needless to say. Brian, who does restorations, also complained about the photographs being

split in half occasionally although it is difficult to see how that could have been avoided in the format used.

Highly technical, the Goldie book is chiefly meant for Goldie freaks and even if most of the information involved is available in “The Gold Star Book” (Bruce Main-Smith, from Autobooks in Burbank or Motorsport in St Louis) the dedicated researcher will have to have this one too . . . as there are useful illustrations, photos, and charts. Available from Haynes Publishing Co.. 861 Lawrence Dr., Newberry Park. Calif. 91320 and priced at $5.95.
