25 YEARS AGO DECEMBER 1987
ROUNDUP
Just when much of the country was gripped by winter doldrums, the motorcycle industry saved enthusiasts everywhere with a pile of fresh hardware for the coming year. “New Bike Preview ’88” was headlined by the 13,000-rpm Suzuki GSX-R750 and supported by the Katana 600 and 1100 (the latter with cool, electrically adjustable windscreen), as well as the Yamaha FZR400 and Honda’s radical RC30 Superbike homologation special. Unfortunately, as the subtitle to the Honda story read, “A serious Superbike for the streets—but not our streets.” We did get it later, and recent rumors suggest Honda is working on a spiritual successor in the form of a MotoGP-inspired sportbike. Please!
•Smack in the middle of this magazine was an ATV test featuring quads attacking the Rubicon Trail; we used to cover these machines in the Eighties. And, moving on...
•Normalcy returned with a full test of the $3298, 217-pounddry Honda CR250R motocrosser: “F0r any of those other 250sto I outgun the Honda for top spot this coming year, it will need to be one absolutely killer motocross machine.”
•Race Watch featured a story called “Top Guns” about the ’87 champions of motocross: Rick Johnson, Micky Dymond and Jeff Ward. Great riders and rad hair!
