THERE ALWAYS IS A FLIPSIDE TO EVERY TREND, AND THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF NEW-MOTORCYCLE sales in the past couple of years is no exception. Inversely, transactions for motorcycle parts, accessories and used bikes are significantly on the rise. Along with a resurgence in new motorcycle sales (a 7.2-percent increase in the first quarter of 2011, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council), eBay has seen rapid growth in other motorcycle-related business this year.
“Parts & Accessories is the fastest-growing category on eBay Motors, which especially stands true for motorcycles,” said Famous Rhodes, senior director at eBay Motors. “We believe that the rise in gas prices, along with motorcycle enthusiasts’ DIY attitude, has played a large part in this upward trend.”
Flere are a few statistics provided by eBay about its motorcycle-related sales: • Parts and riding gear sales were up 15 percent in the first quarter of 2011 • Motorcycle and scooter tire sales increased 29 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 • In early June, more than 6300 motorcycles were listed on eBayMotors.com • A motorcycle is sold every 7 minutes • A motorcycle part is sold every 5.6 seconds • A Flonda motorcycle is sold every 31 minutes • A Yamaha motorcycle is sold every 62 minutes • A Harley-Davidson motorcycle is sold every 32 minutes
