CW EVALUATIONS

Ninja made right

WHEN DEBUTED IN 2006, THE KAWAsaki ZX-14 stood motorcycling on its ear: 170 horsepower at the rear wheel, 2.5-second 0-60-mph acceleration, a 9.8-second quarter-mile and a top speed—admittedly, electronically limited—of 186 mph. Despite all that performance, the big-bore inline-Four had a serious flaw: When you pegged the throttle in any one of the bottom four gears with the engine spinning in the lower third of its powerband, you would experience only "moderate" acceleration thanks to a nanny of a black box.

Ivan's Rockland County Motorcycle sells aTiming Retarder Elim inator(#TRE-008) that fools the ECU into be lieving it is always in sixth gear, mapping for which provides the quickest opening for the secondary throttle butterflies, buying enhanced throttle response and increased power at lower engine speeds.

Installation on our long-term 2006 ZX-14 took only a few minutes and yielded outstanding results. In back to-back fourth-gear runs on the CW dynamometer, the TRE-equipped ZX 14 outperformed the stocker all the way up to well past 7000 rpm, with the greatest gains-as much as 11.5 horsepower and 15.8 foot-pounds of torque-coming be tween2500 and 4000 rpm. Only hitch is that the dash gear indica tor now shows "6" for the first five ratios, not just top. Neutral"N"-functions nor mally.

Think of Ivan's TRE as the best $70 you'll ever spend on your first-gen ZX-14.
