Up & Downs
ROUNDUP
DOWN: To promoter Jim Gianatsis, for once again appealing to our baser instincts and enticing us to run news of his L.A. Calendar custom bike show, July 15-16 in Long Beach, California. On display will be 200 exhibitors, including manufacturers, aftermarket firms and top-name builders—not to mention many of the models straight from the pages of Jim’s line of pinup calendars. UP: To actor and Norton rider Keanu Reeves, for somehow remaining extant. The L.A. resident told Playboy he relaxes after movie shoots by pointing his Commando downhill at night, turning the engine and lights off, then coasting silently to the Malibu shoreline. Perhaps not the best action plan for someone who has already punctured his abdomen, broken an ankle and lost teeth in motorcycle mishaps. “After an accident, I just vow to go a little slower,” Reeves said. Maybe try turning the headlight on, too?
UP: To Yamaha factory MXer Chad Reed, for proving that he’s tough and smart. During practice for Round 10 of the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross series at Daytona International Speedway, the former series champion crashed hard, injuring his shoulder. The next day, during his heat race, Reed crashed again, but this time the biff was intentional-to allow him to move on to the two-lapsshorter semi, which he won. In the main event, Reed rode courageously to finish second and stay within two points of Suzuki-mounted championship-leader Ricky Carmichael.
