Rev'lt Hurricane Gloves

Summertime solution

CAN WE ALL AGREE THAT HEAT SUCKS? Right, but how to keep cool while warding off road rash? Rev’lt, a Dutch company now making a strong run at the U.S. market, has some suggestions.

We came away quite impressed with Rev Tt’s mesh Airflow jacket used during last year’s “Sturgis Shootout,” and have spent the past six months with several sets of the company’s ventilated Hurricane gloves. Simply put, we like.

First off, this is no lightweight around-town summer glove; it’s a serious piece of sporting gear-“Engineered Skin” is Rev’It’s buzz-phrase. Protection is provided by a combination of natural and synthetic leather in the palm, an array of pads (heel, top, pinky finger and wrist sides) and a substantial thermoplastic knuckle guard. An artfully applied dribble of silicone across the finger bottoms enhances grip. The gauntlet extends some 2/4 inches beyond the elasticized wrist and secures with a wide strip of velcro.

Ventilation comes mainly from lined mesh panels that run across the top of the glove and between the fingers, augmented by a few perforations along the tops and bottoms of the fingers. At speed, cooling airflow is felt, but the effect is not as dramatic as in other vented gloves we’ve sampled. By design, explains Rev’lt, the price you pay for increased crashability.

“It’s purposely overbuilt,” says a company spokesman. “We realize that it may not perform as well in 105-degree weather as a lighterweight summer glove.” We’ll take the trade-off. □
