ROUNDUP

UP: To Arai Helmets, for celebrating the life’s work of Jay Springsteen. To commemorate Springer’s 30 years of professional dirt-track racing, the Japanese helmet manufacturer commissioned an 88-page book chock-full of wonderful photographs by Dan Mahony, Bert Shepard and Shogo Nakao. Want a copy? Corner Jay or his wife Judy at one of the select AMA Grand National dirt-track or AHRMA roadrace nationals he’s planning to do this year or email them at jjspringsteen@sbcglobal. net. C ost is $25 including shipping.

UP: To dirt-legends Malcolm Smith, Chris Haines and Jack Johnson, for taking the Class 50 win in the 2004 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. The “Dream Team” of experienced Baja competitors rode their Honda XR650 at a 50-mph average over the 1013.6-mile course. Smith, 63, won the inaugural Baja 1000 in 1967, and the team had 26 class wins among them. Here’s to spending your golden years racing on two wheels!

DOWN: To the power of love, for making people do strange things. Last December, a Cambodian teenager stole his neighbor’s motorcycle (keys conveniently in the ignition!) in order to pay a “love magician” for potions that allegedly would bring back his errant girlfriend, reported the South African Mail & Guardian. Unfortunately, he never got the potions because he was arrested and jailed by local police. Perhaps if he had simply offered to take his ex for a ride, things might have turned out better.
