CRF450 GETS X'D

Trail riders and enduro racers rejoice: the 2005 Honda CRF450X is a reality. Based on the CRF450R motocrosser, the $6999 X gets the fourth-generation aluminum frame with forged headstock and swingarm plates, while the spark-arrestor-equipped sohc engine is now electric-start (yes!), with a wide-ratio five-speed transmission. Big news for California riders is that the bike meets CARB emissions standards, making it green sticker-legal. The fully adjustable 47mm inverted Showa fork and shock are retuned for "competitive" off-road use. Fuel tank capacity is 2.27 gallons, slightly larger than that of the CRF MXer, while an 18-inch rear rim, odometer, as well as a headand taillight round out the trail-friendly alterations. If it's anything like the CRF250X, this bike is set to give Husqvarna, KTM and the rest a major run for their money in the big-bore enduro segment. -Mark Hoyer
