Ups & Downs
ROUNDUP
UP: To “Friends” television star and gearhead Matt LeBlanc, for puttin’ on the charm. Asked in a recent cover story for Entertainment Weekly if he would rather have posed for the front of Road & Track, LeBlanc replied, “No offense, but yeah. Road & Track...Car & Driver...Cycle World would be bitchin’! They don’t really put actors on the cover. I know the editor over there-still can’t get on the cover. I can’t catch a break. No Emmy, no cover of Cycle World. I got nothing.”
DOWN: To our friends at Speed Channel, for going back on their word. “We will not become the NASCAR Channel,” proclaimed VP of Programming Rick Miner at a Daytona press conference trying to calm fears among motorcyclists that bike coverage would be diminished under the network’s new ownership. Well, Rickster, what happened? A few laps into your live coverage of the hotly contested AMA Supersport race from Sears Point, you broke away for a halfhour recap of NASCAR’s just-finished Richmond 400, telling viewers they could catch a repeat of the bikes later that evening. Axing live bike racing for a rehash of some redneck wreckfest? Thanks for showing your true colors.
UP: To California State Parks, for showing they get it. A recent magazine advertisement depicted an off-road rider kicking back on his dirtbike, with the slogan, “Let the tourists have their theme parks.” At a time when dirtbikes are increasingly coming underfire, it’s refreshing to see off-roading portrayed in a positive light.
