Nite Headhunter Lighting System
Double the dirt
IF SOMEONE TOLD YOU THAT FOR $390 you could double your off-road riding time, you might be skeptical. But the NiteRider Headhunter is no mystery potion or sneaky ploy to skip work. In reality, it’s a miniature high-intensity-discharge, metal-halide-arc-bulb-equippcd lighting system that runs off a compact nickel-metal-hydride battery. Yes, Sher-lock, you can now ride in the dark.
Thanks to improvements in battery life and the ability to draw insane light output from very little power, the Headhunter is capable of candlepower equivalent to a 55-watt headlight. All of this, mounted directly on your helmet.
Though the light itself is crisp and white, it’s emitted in a flood pattern, so it’s best suited for speeds less than, say, 35 mph. The Headhunter could serve as your only light source, but it works best as a complement to your dirtbike’s headlight, which tends to be more of a narrow, pencil-type beam and leaves the area directly in front of the front fender a little vague. Used this way, the Headhunter gives a splash of light wherever you look, even off to the extreme sides or behind. It’s great for technical trails where the bike’s headlight alone just doesn’t cut it.
Run time for the 3 x 2 x 5-inch battery pushes 4 hours in continuous-use mode; expect less with a series of on/off cycles, as firing the bulb draws more than constant running. The light itself is held in place with a single velcro-backed strap, and choice of mounting location is a question of personal preference. We ^ located ours on the side of the helmet’s chin bar; others favored mounting it atop the visor.
