Yuasa Automatic Battery Charger

Trickle-charger acid test

RIDE YOUR MOTORCYCLE EACH AND every day, even in the dead of winter? A tall call, at best. How, then, to keep its battery in good cranking condition without regular kick-overs? Battery-maker Yuasa proposes using its Automatic Battery Charger, a compact, plastic-cased plug-in sporting three simple LED readouts for errorfree, at-a-glance updates.

Unlike many trickle-chargers, the 12volt/. 9-amp, reverse-polarity-protected Auto Charger slots directly into a standard household wall socket. Hence, there’s no mid-mounted module to trip over in the dark or balance on a bike’s seat. A generous 10 feet of cabling connects charger to battery via ring terminal connectors or mini alligator clips, both of which are provided. From there on out, the Auto Charger does all the work. Display-wise, a red LED indicates the unit is “on,” yellow signifies charging and green is for “float.”

Ups At-a-glance display Quick-disconnect cabling Won’t boil your battery acid

Downs Design not quite as clever if you're color-blind

Tested on a brand-new battery over a six-month period, the Auto Charger came through with flying colors. There was no change in the battery’s appearance, and its acid level decreased only incrementally-far less than we’ve seen with other chargers. More importantly, when hooked up to a load-tester, the battery showed full power.

What else can you ask for?
