Racking the toys

HAULING MOTORCYCLES AROUND IS the dirtbike rider's penance. You've got to get the bikes to the track or trail, right? But doing it with the least amount of hassle and the minimum amount of vehicular damage requires some clever thinking. And it also helps to have a Sportbar from Spectrum Innovations.

When the bed of one staffer's Dodge pickup began showing signs of serious wear from the pressure of tied-down motorcycles, we halted further damage by fitting a Sportbar. Designed to fit most pickup trucks, the powdercoated steel unit can be equipped with a van ety of accessories that accommodates streetbikes, dirtbikes and even bicycles.

On our man's Ram, the 15-minute in stallation was as simple as drilling four holes in the bed and securing the bar with four bolts. We then added two tie-down loops ($15 each), two motorcycle shoes ($35 each) and an ex tended motorcycle shoe ($40) for stag gering the bikes. We even opted for the bicycle mount ($30).

The accessories themselves bolted easily onto the rack, which offers infi nite adjustment. And when hauling mo torcycles, we found both the rack and the attachments to be super-secure even under race-truck-like off-road driving conditions. When we were bikeless, the rack blended with the truck's lines and was relatively unobtrusive.

More importantly, the Sportbar pre vented any further damage to our tester's truck bed. Add to that the fact that the Sportbar is a sano design and simple to use, and it's good riddance to all that multi-bike-loading voodoo.
