FACTORY HARLEY CUSTOMS
THE V-ROD WASN’T THE only news at HarleyDavidson’s ’02 dealer show. Also announced were two limited-production models from the Custom Vehicle Operations group.
First up was the FXDWG3, a customized Dyna Wide Glide that sits lower on special Fox shocks and rides a little sportier with a dirt-track-style handlebar. Harley accessories assure that it fairly glitters, while the Navy Blue Pearl with Gilded Silver flames-applied using traditional foil-leafing techniques, just as in Renaissance manuscripts-stands out from the crowd. The conspicuous extravagance is the ostrich seat. Mechanically, the FXDWG3 retains a standard 1450cc engine. Just 2000 units will be built, 1000 in blue and 1000 in Vivid Black with gold leaf flames. Price is $22,995.
The second model was the Road-King-based FLF1RSEI, code-named “Mad Dog.” The removal of passing lamps and a scaled-down and darkened windbreak lighten the big tourer’s appearance, while 1 '/4-inch bars allow internal wire routing. A 1550cc kit provides plenty of roll-on power, while polished spun-aluminum wheels add visual punch. Two “Radical Custom” flamed-paint combinations are offered: Brandywine with red flames, or purple with silver. The exotic seat features manta ray inserts. Production is limited to 2400 units, with equal numbers of each color scheduled. Price? A cool $25K.
