Ups & Downs
ROUNDUP
UP: To cool picture-man and CW contributor Joe Bonnello, for creating a new kind of pin-up. The always-energetic photographer culled the best Y2K dirt shots from his collection, and put them together in this year-2001 calendar. Freestyle, supercross, motocross and more are all represented in full-on, in-your-face color. Furthermore, significant dates, such as the anniversary of Jeremy McGrath’s first 250cc SX win in ’93 and Bob Hannah’s victory at the first Anaheim SX in 77, are flagged.
The motocalendar is available for $12 from MBI Publishing, 729 Prospect Ave., Osceola, Wl 54020; 800/7662388; www.motorbooks.com.
DOWN: To Missouri state Senator Marvin “Doc” Singleton, for gettin’ wacky. When a fellow politician proposed that Missouri repeal its helmet law, Singleton wholeheartedly agreed, provided non-helmeted riders had $100,000 medical-insurance policies, furnished proof of liability insurance, wore seatbelts (no kidding!) and took breathalyzer tests before every ride.
The amended bill made it out of the Senate, but eventually died in the House. Dang! Just when we were shopping for shoulder belts...
UP: To Rob McCurdy, for seeing the light. A newspaper columnist for the Mansfield, Ohio, News Journal, the self-avowed stick-and-ball type spent a weekend last July covering the AMA Superbike races at Mid-Ohio. He later referred to the series as “the biggest secret in professional sports,” and enthused, “These are the professional athletes to look up to. These are the guys TV cameras should be trailing. These are the guys tape recorders should be foisted upon. These are the guys we should be paying attention to.
If only we knew.” Indeed.
