SUPER X UNVEILED

Excelsior-Henderson’s 1999 “production-intent” Super X was shown at the annual Sturgis Rally and Races in Sturgis, South Dakota. Aesthetically, the 647-pound cruiser resembles previous prototypes (CW, January, 1997), but there are several notable updates.

Internally unchanged, the fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 1386cc V-Twin has polished, more pronounced cylinder finning, new case covers and a redesigned air-cleaner cover. A

2-into-2 exhaust system replaces the previous soio-murtier setup.

The leading-link front end differs from previous iterations by virtue of its more compact exposed springs. The fender is mounted nearer the 16-inch spoked wheel, and the floating disc front brake is now located on the left. Resplendent in two-tone paint and revamped badgework, the 5.5-gallon gas tank is notched for cylinder-head clearance in two places instead of one as before. Overall, the bike has a lower, more hunkered-down appearance. Color choices include Raven Black, Henderson Blue/Metallic Silver and Excelsior Green/Metallic Oyster. Suggested retail price should be between $18,000 and $18,500. For your nearest Excelsior-Henderson dealer, call 612/873-7000.
