UPS AND DOWNS

UP: To the motor officers of Duluth, Georgia, for being the first police department in the U.S. to forsake the ubiquitous Harley-Davidson Big Twins and Kawasaki KZ1000s in favor of sportier Buell RS1 200s, thus bettering their chances of catching speeding motorists.

DOWN: To the motor officers of Duluth, Georgia, for being the first police department in the U.S. to for sake the ubiquitous Harley-Davidson Big Twins and Kawasaki KZ1 000s in favor of sportier Buell RS1 200s, thus bettering their chances of catching speeding motorcyclists.

DOWN: To syndicated columnist Dave Barry, for having a trim grasp on the obvious. In a recent column, Barry identified behavior that in his opinion qualifies people as jerks. In cluded on that list were Harley riders who rev their engines. "I'm not say ing that all Harley guys-some of my friends are Harley guys-engage in this obnoxious behavior," Barry al lowed. "I'm just saying that the ones who do engage in it are jerks." Thanks for clearing that up, Dave. Only next time, why don't you tell each one personally?

DOWN: To the trespassing off roaders who have jeopardized the future of West Virginia's Hatfield McCoy Recreation Area. Following a series of successful demonstration des that proved dirtbikers could behave responsibly, area landowners have shown the Hatfield-McCoy Steering Committee videotapes doc umenting unauthorized trail use. And because the riding area's future hinges on the landowners' approval, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail Scouts are asking all off -roaders to stay away until the trail system is formally opened to the public. With thou sands of miles of trails, they promise it will be worth the wait.
