UPS AND DOWNS
LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY
UP: To the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), for its continuing support of local charities. Late last year, SCRAMP the non-profit organization that runs Laguna Seca Raceway, donated more than $400,000 to 66 organizations.
Since its inception in 1957, SCRAMP has contributed more than $6 million to charitable organizations in the Monterey area.
UP: To Answer Products, an offroad apparel and accessories company, for putting its money where its mouth is. In conjunction with the AMA, Answer established the Open Trail Coalition to help protect existing trails and open new areas to off-roaders. Then it donated $4100 to the program.
You, too, can help the cause. Answer is selling Open Trail Coalition T-shirts for $16; the coalition gets $2 from each sale. To order, write Answer Products, Inc., 27460 Scott Ave, Valencia, CA 91335.
DOWN: To Jim Buckley, Apple USA president, for a failed attempt at being cool. Buckley tried to ride a Harley-Davidson on the stage at a recent Apple national sales meeting in Atlanta as part of the computer company’s Rock ‘n Rule campaign, reports Computer Reseller News, a computer industry trade publication.
Alas, Buckley couldn’t stop the bike quickly enough. The front wheel overran the stage, the bike tipped over and Buckley fell into the crowd and injured his wrist.
DOWN: To Galoob, makers of Micro Machines, a collection of miniature motorcycles, for rather questionable taste. CW reader Eddie Hall of Columbus, Georgia, ordered a set of Micro Machines, that included a “bonus vehicle.”
“My bonus vehicle was an ambulance," says Hill. “Cute.” S3
