UP: To Magnolia Publishing, for printing Take a Ride: A Motorcycle Adventure, a children's book telling the story of a boy who spends his day on a motorcycle. Author Donna Keegan said, "We have attempted to show motorcycling as an integral part of a happy, active life, including the excitement of travel, the camaraderie of new friends and a successful conclusion to every ride." To order the book, send $11.95 to Magnolia Publishing, P0. Box 5537, Magnolia, MA 01930.

UP: To Byron Hines, Vance & Hines' co-founder and master en gine builder, for helping save a man whose car stalled on a Los Angeles, California, area train crossing. Hines and another passerby got the man out seconds before an Amtrak train going 65 mph hft the car. TMWe said, `Get out' and the crossing arms started coming down" Hines re called. He yanked the man from the car and carried him away, about 15 seconds before the train hit. "Even at the last second, I always thought we could do it," Hines says. "What was intimidating was the noise the train makes, the light coming closer and the horn honking."

DOWN: To AirOne Communica tions Network, an in-flight phone service company, for an ad perpet uating the stereotype that motorcy clists are evil. Its ad is intended to make calling from the airport seem like a poor choice. A photo depicts an open pay-phone next to a big, gnmy, long-haired biker. In a way, though, the photo shows motorcyclists in a positive light, sug gesting that they're too smart to spend big sums of money just to make a call while on an airplane.
