BACK ON TRACK IN CALIFORNIA
CALIFORNIA ROADRACers, take heart, the California Sports Car Club's proposed track at Buttonwillow, located in the southern San Joaquin Valley is a near-certainty.
According to project coordinator Steve Madsen, environmental and bureaucratic red tape has been untangled and a grading permit to begin construction has been granted. Groundbreaking for Phase 1-a 2-mile circuit-was scheduled for July, and that means that racing could begin at Buttonwillow by next spring. Phase 2, a curvy-technical 1-mile circuit, will be built as finances allow. Both phases will eventually be linked to form a 3mile track.
Madsen says the circuit is designed for 365-days-a-year amateur racing. Motorcycles will be welcome. Buttonwillow is 35 miles west of Bakersfield and about 120 miles north of Los Angeles.
