RACE WATCH

Motocross, 1989

Every year at this time, the motocrossers play musical factories. When the music stopped, this is where everyone was sitting: Honda still has Supercross and 500 National Champion Rick Johnson, 125 National Champion George Holland, Jeff Stanton and Guy Cooper, along with Pro-support riders Mike Keidroski and Larry Ward.

Kawasaki has 250 National Champion Jeff Ward again, with Motocross des Nations hero Ron Lechien and 125 Western Supercross Champion Jeff Matasevitch. Kawasaki also has some 60 Team Green support riders.

Yamaha has dropped Broc Glover, who is rumored to be on his way to Europe to ride for KTM, while Micky Dymond, Mike LaRocco and Damon Bradshaw carry on.

And finally, Suzuki has eight riders, including Bob Hannah, who will ride only select events—most of his job these days consists of promotion for Suzuki. More of the race-winning chores will fall to Eric Kehoe, Ronnie Tichenor, John O’Mara, Todd DeHoop, Jimmy Gaddis and Steve Childress.

Enduro of the Stars

Off-road racing isn’t exactly the breeding ground of stars in this country. But we do have a handful of riders who have reached semicelebrity status in enduros and desert races. And just about all of them make it a point to gather in one spot every year, to enter in what has become the All-Stars of American off-road racing.

The event is the Tecate Enduro, held just below the border in Baja California every December. This year the entry list had such names as Malcolm Smith and Dick Burleson, and no less than six current and former national champions. On top of that, practically the entire U.S. ISDE team was on hand. When it was all over, former National Enduro Champion Kevin Hines took the win over current 250cc National Hare and Hound Champion Larry Roeseler
