TURBO INSURANCE
Big engined motorcycles frequently manage to be just as economical in fuel consumption as smaller bikes despite The additional power. Where they don't fare so well is with insurance, which is normally paid for depending on engine size. Now that a number of turbocharged motorcycles are becoming available, providing the performance, weight and price of much larger machines, it might seem that they could escape the insurance penalty of a large engine.
Not so, according to the insurance companies we’ve talked to. Because of the potential speed and expense of the turbo motorcycles most insurance companies will be doubling the premium for turbocharged machines. This is not the same as doubling the displacement, and could freate even higher insurance rates. Until claims statistics can be compiled the insurance companies have no way of knowing what the costs of insuring these bikes will be and are setting the rates high enough to cover possible losses. If enough turbocharged bikes become available, Tâtes can then be set according to actuarial findings, but that could take several years.
So much for one loophole.
