FUEL-INJECTED RCB WINS EIGHT-HOUR
A new fuel-injected version of the Honda RCB endurance racer won the third round of the Coup d’Endurance series, an eight-hour race at the Nurburgring in West Germany. Reigning endurance champions Christian Leon and Jean-Claude Chemarin rode their Honda to a one-lap victory over runners up Helmet Dahne and his partner Egid Schwemmer on a private Honda CB900FZ prepared by Eckert.
The fact that Honda abandoned the proven successful CV carburetors used on its previous RCBs in favor of the experimental injection system raised speculation that Honda street bikes with fuel injection are in the works. Honda commonly incorporates features proven in racing into its road machines, and the latest CB750 engine has its roots in the RCB effort. Apparently there are a few bugs to work out of the system at this time as Leon complained of a “brutal surge of power” and said that the system did not yet equal the carburetors used before in overall performance.
An interesting sidenote is that Dahne. an engineer bv trade, is in charge of sport service for Metzeler tires, serves as a development rider and participates in tire design. At the Nurburgring, Dahne’s Honda was fitted with Metzeler slicks. Si
