BORDER PATROL

A timely notice. Mexican and U.S. officials working through the Commission of the Californias wish motorcyclists to know that Americans and Mexicans crossing the border in either direction should be aware and informed of laws affecting their bikes.

California, for instance, requires either a license plate or an off-road sticker, even if the bike is being transported. U.S. customs will be performing surprise and random inspections, to be sure motorcycles crossing the border are in the hands of their legal owners, and to be sure state taxes have been paid.

Mexican officials say that all vehicles used in that country, on road or off, are subject to their home state’s laws or are subject to licensing under Mexican law.

There is also a growing concern that U.S. motorcycles are being used in Mexico minus various pieces of equipment, like mufflers, which are required in Mexico.

Be prepared, in other words.
