ROUND UP
JOE PARKHURST
THIS MONTH the first Cycle World Library hard cover book, "Sammy Miller on Trials," is joined by the first book on American motorcycle racing, featuring one of its most colorful stars, Gary Nixon. "Racer, The Story of Gary Nixon" is now available from Cycle World Books. (See advertisement on page 77.) It is nearly 200 pages in length, with glossy paper and high quality printing, as in the Miller book.
Joe Scalzo, the author, is quite wellknown in racing circles, having been a racer himself, and in the publishing field. He is a contributor to CYCLE WORLD and several other motorcycle magazines and feature editor of our companion automobile magazine, CAR LIFE. This issue contains a fascinating story by Joe of the great racer Carroll Resweber, and next month we will reprint one chapter from the Nixon book as a teaser.
All of us who have read the book are extremely enthused. It is far more than the story of Nixon alone, though that by itself is quite a tale. It is an introspective view into the motorcycle racing world, virtually a primer for the upand-coming young racer.
Though numerous works have been published on automobile racing, professional motorcycle racing has been sadly neglected. We are happy to be the first to shed light on the exciting life behind the scenes in the motorcycle racing world. And this book is not to be the last of its kind; several others are in the works, and we have plans for many more.
AMX IS UNDERWAY
Captain Russ Darnell of the American Motocross Team left for Europe in early March. He will race in Spain, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Russia, Holland, Sweden and England before returning home for the Inter-Am series. Russ raced in California before he left, doing quite well. The nearby photograph shows Russ at his take-off point, the Los Angeles International Airport. CYCLE WORLD will keep you posted on his activities throughout the season.
AND ANOTHER BOOK
Illustrated nearby is yet another book available from Cycle World Books"Motorsport on Two Wheels," devoted to Europe's great road racing eras. The author is CW contributor Richard C. Renstrom, who also writes for several other motorcycle and automotive maga zines. Other sections deal with European world speed record breaking efforts, various GP circuits in Europe, the story of Brooklands, British short circuit racing, the definition of a classic, the vintage years, the story of the great John Surtees and features on several other leading riders.
