CW TEST

BLAKE CONNER SENIOR EDITOR

Bikes like Yamaha’s R1 are becoming so technical that thoroughly testing them is challenging. With so many electronic variables, the possible settings are virtually endless. Thankfully, the R1 is so good out of the box that there is no question it is class leading. But just in case, I’ve decided to keep our R1 for the year as a long-termer, for “further evaluation.” I’ve already got the Circuit ECU and spare wheels to mount up slicks. Trackdays!

DON CANET ROAD TEST EDITOR

-> The R1 has one of the most exhilarating power deliveries of any liter-class sportbike I’ve ridden. Rolling the throttle open at low revs offers crisp response and linear output perfectly suited to casual riding. Pin the throttle, however, and you best brace yourself for the brutal rush of acceleration and 50-horse increase spanning 7,000 to 9,000 rpm. We’re talking power wheelies akin to a 500 CP two-stroke! Fear not; electronic aids have your back.

MARK HOYER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

-> The magic of the R1 for me is the super-high-polish Japanese finish, from build quality to seamlessly sweet functionality, and how it is allied with fantastic power and killer performance. But that engine note! From the crossplane R1 to the FZ-09 triple to the 270-degree FZ-07, somebody at Yamaha Motor has obviously tapped into the Yamaha music business because the company’s new bikes are singing a beautiful song.
