Big tank, heavy flywheel characterize BMW's go-anywhere machine

HERE'S OUR first look at BMW's new liquid-cooled R1200GS Adventure, a 2014 model being unveiled at the EICMA show in early November. As expected, this new Adventure is powered by the same 1,170cc boxer twin found in the standard GS, replete with "vertical-flow" heads and an integral six-speed gearbox featuring a wet clutch. But for improved tractability, especially off-road, the Adventure engine's flywheel has been made nearly 2.1 pounds heavier, which, together with a new vibration damper, improves powertrain smoothness.

And that's not all: The new aluminum fuel tank is 2.6 gallons larger than a standard GS's, and BMW says there's nearly an inch of extra suspension travel front and rear, along with an unspecified tweak to the swingarm geometry that is said to improve handling. What's more, all of the numerous elec tronic riding modes remain available, including the optional Dynamic, Enduro and Enduro Pro riding modes that are activated via a coding plug and allow the rider to adjust the ASC traction control,

ABS and Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), if so fitted.

Other changes for the new Adventure -include revised bodywork, a larger windscreen, hand guards, wider footrests and reinforced gear lever and brake pedal. Lastly, the engine and tank are better protected by crashbars, and a tilt-adjustable seat will keep you com fortable on those long slogs to Torrance, California or Tierra del Fuego.

No word yet on pricing, but we expect the new Adventure to arrive in the US in early 2014.
