Supersize your handlebars

OVERSIZED, TAPERED-WALL HANDLEbars are nothing new. In fact, Easton invented the category nearly two decades ago. Its latest product, the EXP, takes the concept a step farther.

Diameter of the center clamping area is a whopping 35mm—a smidge more than 1 3/8 inches. This is a significant increase over the 7/8-inch industry standard. It's even bigger than the original 1 `/8-inch Pro-Taper.

Conventional straightwall bars are identical in diameter and thickness from tip to tip. Easton "tapers" both the diameter and the thickness of its proprietary EA7O aluminum alloy tubing along the length of the bars to eliminate jagged transitions that can lead to weak points. The claimed result is light, durable bars with improved ride quality. Easton calls this "Intelligent Flex."

Also unique to the EXP is its eight bolt Top Lock clamp ($50). Easton rea sons that eight bolts require less tight ening torque and spread impacts over a broader area. Zinc-plated, 12.9-grade steel hardware will set you back another $10. Parts are sold separately for greater model fitment.

We installed the EXP, matching clamp and hardware on a 2008 Honda CRF45OR. In use, the EXP was noticeably stiffer than the standard 7/8-inch aluminum Renthal bars. This resulted in more precise steering inputs but less "give" over rough terrain, such as acceleration and braking bumps. Bigger impacts, including landings from Pro-level jumps, offered no perceptible difference in feel. So, if you like really stiff han dlebars or tend to fall frequent ly, the EXP is a solid choice. Otherwise, stick with stock.
